It is one of the most common calls we get. The business exists, the website is live, the work is good โ and searching for the service they provide in the town they provide it in returns everybody except them.
There are seven realistic causes. Work through them in this order, because the early ones are both more common and much faster to fix.
1. Your site is not indexed at all
Search Google for your domain preceded by "site:" โ for example, site:yourbusiness.ca. If nothing appears, Google does not have your site at all, and no amount of SEO matters until that is resolved.
Usual causes are a noindex tag left behind after launch, a robots.txt blocking crawlers, or a brand-new site nobody has ever linked to. All are fixable in a day once identified.
2. You have no Google Business Profile, or it is unverified
The map pack sits above the organic results for almost every local search. If you are not in it you have lost the most valuable position on the page before the competition starts. A profile that exists but was never verified does not count.
3. Your profile category is wrong
This one is quietly responsible for an enormous share of local invisibility. A plumber categorized as "Contractor" will struggle to appear for "plumber near me" no matter what else is right. Primary category is the single largest ranking factor on the profile.
4. You have far fewer reviews than the businesses ranking above you
Review volume and recency are major map pack factors. If the top three results in your town have forty reviews each and you have four, that gap alone explains the ranking.
5. Your pages do not say what you do and where
Google cannot rank you for something your site never states plainly. Homepages full of phrases like "solutions for modern business" with no service names and no place names are extremely common, and they rank for nothing.
6. You are competing for the wrong term
A single-location business is unlikely to outrank national directories for a broad head term. But the same business can own the town-level and long-tail variants inside a few months. This is a targeting problem rather than a capability problem, and it is one of the more common ones.
7. Your site is too slow or unusable on mobile
Most local searches are on phones. A site that loads slowly or is hard to use there will not hold position even if everything else is correct.
How to diagnose which one applies
| Symptom | Most likely cause | Typical fix time |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing at all for your business name | Not indexed | Days |
| Website shows, no map listing | No verified profile | 1โ3 weeks with verification |
| Map listing shows for name only, never for service | Wrong category | Days, then a few weeks to settle |
| Appear at position 4โ8 in maps | Review gap | 1โ3 months of steady collection |
| Rank for brand, nothing else | Site does not state services and location | 4โ8 weeks |
| Traffic but no enquiries | Conversion problem, not visibility | 2โ4 weeks |
Run this in the next two minutes
Search your main service plus your town on your phone, not your laptop, and while not signed in. Where do you appear โ map pack, page one, nowhere? Then search "site:yourdomain.ca" and count what comes back. Those two searches identify the cause in most cases, and they cost you nothing.
What we do about it
Most of these are faster and cheaper to fix than owners expect. Indexing problems, category errors, and missing service pages are usually weeks of work, not months, and they frequently produce the largest single jump in visibility a business ever sees.
Send us your business name and the search you expect to appear for, and we will tell you which of the seven is affecting you and what it takes to fix โ with a fixed price attached.
